Fest!Sip “The Power of Memory” Exhibition

Berlangsung di PKKH UGM, dari tanggal 18 September – 1 Oktober 2017. Dalam pameran ini kami hadirkan lini masa sejarah Seni Rupa Modern Indonesia yang periodisasinya kami kerjakan secara seksama, dengan mempertimbangkan banyaknya versi. Kesempatan ini sekaligus kami jadikan ruang untuk menyelidiki berbagai ragam versi pembabagan sejarah Seni Rupa Indonesia Modern. Dengan kata lain, momen ini merupakan kesempatan baik untuk memeriksa kembali historiografi Seni Rupa Modern Indonesia.

This event will be conducted from 18 September to 1 Oktober 2017 at Koesnadi Hardjasoemantri Cultural Center of Gadjah Mada University (PKKH UGM). The timeline of the Indonesian Contemporary Visual Art history. Which we work on its periodic thoroughly and with considering many versions of it, will be presented in the exhibition. This event will also act as a space to investigate various version of the periodic of the Indonesian Contemporary Visual Art history. In other words, this moment is a good opportunity to re-examine the Indonesian Contemporary Visual Art historiography.

HAFIZ RANCAJALE

Seniman cum Kurator kelahiran Pekanbaru, Riau, 4 Juni 1971 silam ini, menyelesaikan studi Seni Murni di Institut Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ) pada tahun 1994. Hafiz banyak terlibat dalam berbagai praktik seni, seperti mendirikan Forum Lenteng dan Ruangrupa di Jakarta, menjadi Pemimpin Redaksi laman www.jurnalfootage.net, kemudian Direktur Artistik OK. Video – “Jakarta International Video Festival” (2003- 2011). Saat ini, Hafiz menjabat Ketua Komite Seni Rupa, Dewan Kesenian Jakarta (DKJ).

Born in Pekanbaru, Riau, in 4 June 1971, this artist-cum-curator completed his study from the Fine Art program at the Jakarta Institute of Arts in 1994. Hafiz has been actively involved in various art practices, such as establishing Forum Lenteng and Ruangrupa in Jakarta, holding the position of Editor in Chief of www.jurnalfootage.net, and Artistic Director of OK. Video – Jakarta International Video Festival (2003-2011). Currently, Hafiz is serving as the Chief of the Visual Art Committee, Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ).


UMA GUMMA

Adi Kusuma atau lebih dikenal sebagai Uma Gumma adalah Seniman dan Penulis ekonomi independen yang tinggal dan bekerja di Yogyakarta. Uma lahir di Magelang pada 10 November 1985, mendapatkan pendidikan formal di Fakultas Ekonomika dan Bisnis, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta. Sebagai seorang pegiat musik, Uma terlibat dalam beberapa proyek musik, aktif dalam forum musik elektronik Soundboutique dan juga menjalankan label rekaman Nirmana Records. Sedang keterlibatannya dalam dunia seni rupa dimulai sejak tahun 2004, dan semakin aktif semenjak tergabung dalam kolektif seniman “Ace House Collective” pada tahun 2011. Dalam karya-karya seninya, Uma sering menggunakan medium suara, untuk merespons isu-isu seputar ekonomi.

Adi Kusuma, a.k.a Uma Gumma, is an artist and independent economics writer who lives and works in Yogyakarta. Uma was born in Magelang in 10 November 1985, taking his formal education at the Faculty of Economics and Business of Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. A music activist, Uma is involved in a number of music projects. He actively participates in Soundboutique electronic music forum and runs Nirmana Records label. He started to deal with visual art in 2004 and got increasingly active after joining Ace House Collective, an artist collective, in 2011. In his works, Uma frequently uses sound as the medium to respond to economic issues.

YUSUF ISMAIL

Di balik video-video lucunya di kanal fluxcup-YouTube, Yusuf Ismail juga memiliki cerita tentang berbagai dunia media. Secara formal, ia mempelajari seni patung di Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Kemudian, sejak 2004 sering terlibat dalam berbagai pameran multimedia dan video. Selain berpameran, Yusuf Ismail juga kerap berpartisipasi di berbagai lokakarya di dalam dan luar negeri, seperti The 4th Tropical Lab Art Camp Workshop di Lasalle College, Singapura (2008); Festival Tanda Kota, Jakarta (2007); dan Music Video Workshop “Britt Nite Out”, Bandung (2005).

Aside from the funny videos on fluxcup-YouTube channel, Yusuf Ismail also has many other stories to tell about the realm of media. He formally studied the art of sculpting at the Faculty of Art and Design of Bandung Institute of Technology. Since 2004, he has been participating a lot in various multimedia and video exhibitions. In addition to doing exhibitions, Yusuf Ismail also often participates in a number of workshops, both domestically and internationally, such as The 4th Tropical Lab Art Camp Workshop at Lasalle College, Singapore (2008); Festival Tanda Kota, Jakarta (2007); and “Britt Nite Out” Music Video Workshop, Bandung (2005).


MADE BAYAK

Darah seni Bayak mengalir turun-temurun dari keluarganya, tumbuh dan besar dari keluarga pembuat Rajah Bali (gambar mistis dalam kepercayaan masyarakat setempat), pembaca dan penulis manuskrip kuno Bali dari daun lontar. Kemudian secara formal, Bayak menyelesaikan pendidikannya di Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Denpasar, Bali. Dalam berkesenian, pria kelahiran Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali tahun 1980 silam ini,
memiliki kegelisahan terhadap represi kapitalistik dan militeristik. Dan kegelisahan Bayak itu akan kita jumpai dalam pameran kali ini.

Bayak inherited the blood of art from his family. He grew up in a family of Rajah Bali (Balinese Sacred Drawings) makers and also Balinese palm-leaf, ancient manuscripts readers and writers. Bayak received his formal education at Indonesian Institute of Arts, Denpasar, Bali. In his works, Bayak, who was born in Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali on 1980, depicts his concerns on capitalistic and military repressions. We will see how they are portrayed in Bayak’s works in this exhibition.

LAB LABA-LABA

Pada tahun 2014, Edwin (sutradara film Postcards from the Zoo, dan Babi Buta yang Ingin Terbang) bersama beberapa seniman Indonesia menggagas sebuah kelompok kerja kolaboratif yang berfokus pada proses pembelajaran dan apresiasi film melalui medium film analog yang dinamai Lab Laba Laba. Memulai kerja kreatifnya di gedung laboratorium film terbesar di Indonesia milik Perusahaan Film Negara (PFN). Berangkat dari kegelisahannya melihat terbengkalainya ribuan rol film produksi PFN, Lab Laba Laba kemudian berinisiatif mengumpulkan dana dan tenaga untuk merawat dan mengelola film-film tersebut.

In 2014, Edwin (the director of “Postcards From The Zoo” and “Babi Buta Yang Ingin Terbang (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly)” along with a number of Indonesian artists initiated a collaborative working group, named Lab Laba-Laba, focusing on film study and appreciation through analog movies. They began their creative works at the biggest film laboratory in Indonesia, owned by the State Film Company (PFN). With the concern on the thousands of abandoned film rolls produced by PFN, Lab Laba-Laba started to raise fund and resources to preserve and organize the rolls.


BAMBANG “TOKO” WITJAKSONO

Seniman kelahiran Yogyakarta, 27 Maret 1973 ini menyelesaikan pendidikan formal di Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta pada tahun 1997. Pada tahun yang sama, bersama dengan Popok Tri Wahyudi, Samuel Indratma, dan Ari Diyanto, Bambang “Toko” membentuk kelompok seni “Apotik Komik”, yang akhirnya membubarkan diri tahun 2004. Bambang “Toko” mulai berpameran tunggal sejak tahun 2001 dengan mengusung karya-karya yang sering kali berupa kritik sosial dan mudah diterima oleh berbagai kalangan. Kemudian pada tahun 2005, ia berhasil meraih gelar Master dari Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Pada tahun 2008−2009, Bambang “Toko” juga menjadi salah satu pencetus Art Jog.

He was born in Yogyakarta in 27 March 1973 and graduated from Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta in 1997. In the same year, together with Popok Tri Wahyudi, Samuel Indratma, and Ari Diyanto, he formed an artist group, “Apotik Komik”, that disbanded in 2004. Bambang “Toko” started to hold solo exhibitions in 2001, displaying his works, which often express social criticisms that can appeal to people from many different backgrounds. In 2005 he earned his master’s degree from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). In 2008-2009 Bambang “Toko” was involved in Jogja Art Fair and initiated its transformation into Art Jog.

UJI “HAHAN” HANDOKO

Lahir di Kebumen, Jawa Tengah tahun 1983, Uji “Hahan” Handoko lulus dari Fakultas Seni Rupa, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta pada tahun 2009. Dalam berkarya, “Hahan” menggabungkan berbagai citra dari komik, kartun, dan budaya pop dengan sajian yang lebih kompleks. Karyanya menawarkan komentar tentang berbagai polah hidup generasinya dengan tema serius namun diperlakukan dengan sentuhan ringan yang menipu juga jenaka. “Hahan” pernah masuk sebagai finalis posisi 30 besar untuk Hadiah Seni Sovereign tahun 2008 serta melakukan program residensi di Seoul, Korea Selatan.

Born in Kebumen, Central Java in 1983, Uji “Hahan” Handoko graduated from the Faculty of Fine Art, Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta in 2009. In his works, “Hahan” incorporates various images from comics, cartoons, and pop culture into a more complex presentation. His works are loaded with comments on the various lifestyle existing in his generation, a serious theme treated in a light, trolling, and comical way. “Hahan” was one of the top-30 finalists of The Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2008 and involved in the artist-in-residence program in Seoul, Korea.


PR SENI

Pengelola Ruang Seni (PR Seni) merupakan kelompok belajar terbuka yang diinisiasi untuk merespons kebutuhan akan ruang bertukar pengalaman dan pengetahuan bersama rekan sesama pekerja seni di Yogyakarta. Kelompok yang aktif sejak Oktober 2016 ini bermula dari jalinan pertemanan antarindividu yang ruang kerja dan ruang geraknya berada di wilayah Mantrijeron, Yogyakarta. PR Seni terdiri atas Theodora Agni, Gintani Swastika, Elizabeth Kama, Eleonora Yuanita, Putri Siswanto, Fredy Hendra, dan Ama Bahas.

Pengelola Ruang Seni (PR Seni) is a public learning group initiated to provide a room for artists in Yogyakarta to exchange stories and knowledge. This group has been active since October 2016. It was initially run by artists who produce their works and whose working space is in Mantrijeron, Yogyakarta. PR Seni consists of: Theodora Agni, Gintani Swastika, Elizabeth Kama, Eleonora Yuanita, Putri Siswanto, Fredy Hendra, and Ama Bahas.

ANDRI WILLIAM

Andri William, lahir di Jakarta, kini tinggal dan bekerja di Yogyakarta. Berkarya di bidang fotografi dan videografi. Dikenal sebagai salah satu penggiat Ruang MES 56, kolektif seni berbasis di Yogyakarta yang berfokus membangun kesadaran dan literasi visual, terutama melalui pameran, lokakarya, dan proyek seni.

Born in Jakarta, living and working in Yogyakarta. A photographer and videographer. One of the artists of Ruang MES 56, an arts collective based in Yogyakarta, focusing on developing visual awareness and literacy through exhibitions, workshops, and art projects.


LARAS (Studies of Music in Society)

LARAS berdiri pada Oktober 2014, sebuah kelompok studi yang berfokus pada isu-isu musik dalam masyarakat. Alih-alih memperlakukan musik sebagai produk atau teks stagnan dan melepaskannya dari konteks sosial, Laras justru berkiblat ke mempertunjukkan musik sebagai fenomena kultural yang dinamis dalam proses-proses produksi, distribusi, serta konsumsinya. Kelompok kerja Laras terdiri atas Rizky Sasono, Leilani Hermiasih, Michael H.B. Raditya, dan Irfan R. Darajat.

Established on October 2014 as a public group focusing on the studies of music issues in society. LARAS treats music as a dynamic cultural phenomenon in terms of its production, distribution, and consumption rather than a mere product or text without social context. The group consists of Rizky Sasono, Leilani Hermiasih, Michael H. B. Raditya, and Irfan R. Darajat.

CLUB ETSA

Club Etsa diinisiasi pada pertengahan tahun 2015 di Studio Keloran, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Komunitas ini berfokus pada studi dan pengembangan teknik seni cetak etsa, salah satu teknik dalam seni grafis-seni rupa. Melahirkan karya-karya cetak etsa dengan hasil akhir yang beragam, baik itu dua dimensi maupun tiga dimensi. Mulai tahun 2017, sepakat untuk membuat karya komunitas dengan memperdalam tema yang diangkat dan mengembangkan bentuk akhir, serta dimensi karya. Club Etsa juga membuka kelas lokakarya cetak etsa di studio dan beberapa perhelatan kesenian.

Club Etsa was initiated in mid 2015 at Keloran Studio, Bantul, Yogyakarta. This community focuses on the study and development of visual art printmaking technique called ‘etching’. A variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional etching prints has been produced by the community. Starting from 2017 Club Etsa commits to produce works by employing more profound themes and developing the works’ final form and dimension. The club also opens etching workshop classes in studio and at several art events.


LASHITA SITUMORANG

Lashita Situmorang lahir di Samarinda tahun 1977. Belajar keramik di Jurusan Kriya, dan Seni Rupa, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta tahun 1996-2007. Karyanya adalah komentar tentang kehidupan pada umumnya. Kegelisahannya menjadi perempuan di masyarakat tempat tinggalnya ditunjukkan dalam karya-karyanya. Mengerjakan projek “Red Light District in Urban Perspective” sejak tahun 2008. Pernah mengadakan lokakarya seni dan kerajinan selama tiga bulan penuh di sebuah studio sewaan di Sarkem (Pasar Kembang), Yogyakarta. Sebagai seniman, Lashita percaya bahwa ia dapat menawarkan berbagai cara untuk melihat masalah (sosial), dan beragam cara tak biasa dalam menanggapi persoalan.

Born in 1977 in Samarinda. Studying ceramics at the Department of Crafts, and then the Faculty of Fine Arts, Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta, in 1996-2007. Lashita’s works are her commentaries of life in general. Her uneasiness on being a woman in the society she lives in are shown in her works. She worked on the “Red Light District in Urban Perspective” project in 2008. She held an art and craft workshop for three months in a rented studio in Sarkem (Pasar Kembang), Yogyakarta. As an artist, she believes that she is capable of offering different ways of seeing a (social) problem and uncommon ways of responding to the issue(s).
